8 Years NED!

Well, here we are – 8 years (and a few more wrinkles) later. On February 9, 2013, I was recovering in the ICU after surgery to remove my right lung, pleura, partial diaphragm and pericardial sac, and mediastinal lymph nodes. As drugged and in pain as I was, the moment Dr. Flores told me I was NED (No Evidence of Disease) – and the hope that it held for us – remains crystal clear.

Miles and I know how lucky we are to be here today. We often think of the friends we’ve lost along the way to this awful disease, and those we know who continue to battle. We hope like hell that someday – hopefully soon – the possibility of receiving a diagnosis like mine is something no person will have to go through. In the meantime, we remain committed to fighting for lung cancer awareness and funding, and to a better day for all of us who are affected by this disease.

Stay safe out there, everyone. I’ll be cuddled up inside with these two – the reasons I fought so hard so long ago.

  4. Dear Emily,

I am SO happy for you and your family! 8 years NED!!!!! Your persistence, strength and hope are an inspiration to everyone fighting this vicious disease.

I just saw Dr. Flores for my 6 month scan last month and all is good! This makes 5 years NED for me, a milestone I was hoping and praying to reach! Now I graduate to yearly scans, which is good since as you know, the scananxiety is rough!

Thanks so much for sharing your AWESOME news and the pictures of your beautiful family. You made my day!!!πŸ™‚

  8. Great news! Congratulations! This is indeed a blessing. I’m in my eighth year too. It is hard not to think of those who have not been so fortunate but we don’t forget and keep telling our stories hoping things will change and improve for the others. Enjoy those beautiful little girls.

  9. I worked with Robin Finnerty when you were first diagnosed and kept up with your progress. She and I have both retired but still communicate quite often! I am so happy to read this update. God is good….

  10. WONDERFUL to read your posting, to see the photos, and to know that you are NED!! Love hearing super news. You, Miles and the girls made my day! Thank you! I also want to thank you because I know that you will always be an advocate, fighter and champion for all of us who have been affected by lung cancer. oxoxo

  11. Congratulations Emily! I’m so happy for you and Miles. Who would have thought 8 years ago that you would be living your best life with such a beautiful family!

Although I would never wish this type of challenge on anyone, I do wish everyone could experience something in their journey that would give them the appreciation for life that both of our families enjoy every day! I wish you all the health and happiness life has to offer.

  12. Emily and Miles: You don’t know me. I’m an old friend of Michelle’s from Shaler. I’ve never responded before. I’ve been quietly watching from a distance from the beginning. Michelle and I lost our friend Eric a couple years ago. In one of my last conversations with Eric he asked how you were. Satellite hearts far and wide have been circling, loving and praying. To say there is joy in the universe for you is an understatement.

Bless you. Among your blessings is having Michelle as a Mother/In-Law. Take it from someone who is uniquely situated to testify, Michelle is beyond beautiful inside and out and always has been.
